There are few wildlife encounters on Earth that compare to standing a few metres from a wild mountain gorilla in the misty undergrowth of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It is physically demanding, occasionally muddy, and completely unforgettable — and a little preparation goes a long way toward making the day run smoothly.

What to Expect on the Day

Trekkers gather early at a park headquarters for a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, who assign each group to one of Bwindi's habituated gorilla families. From there, the walk itself can last anywhere from one to six hours depending on where the family has moved to overnight — the terrain is steep, forested, and often damp underfoot. Once your group locates the gorillas, you are permitted a full hour in their presence, watching them feed, groom, and play at close range.

What to Pack

  • Sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking boots with good grip
  • Long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt tucked in, to guard against nettles and safari ants
  • Gardening gloves for gripping vegetation on steep sections
  • A light rain jacket — Bwindi's weather changes quickly
  • Drinking water and energy snacks
  • A modest amount of cash to tip your porter and guide

We strongly recommend hiring a local porter at the trailhead. Beyond the practical help carrying your daypack and steadying you on the trail, it puts income directly into the local community that lives alongside the park.

Fitness and Timing

You do not need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness makes the experience far more enjoyable. Porters and rangers are used to supporting trekkers of all ability levels, including older travellers, and will adjust the pace accordingly. The dry seasons (June to August and December to February) offer the most comfortable underfoot conditions, though gorilla trekking runs year-round.
