The Nile squeezes through a 7-metre gorge to create Africa's most powerful waterfall. Here's how to experience it in full: game drive, boat cruise, and hike included.
At Murchison Falls, the entire Victoria Nile is forced through a gorge just seven metres wide before dropping in a churning, thunderous plunge into the plains below. It is the single most powerful natural spectacle in Uganda, and the anchor of the country's largest national park.
Three Ways to Experience the Falls
The morning game drive. The savanna north of the Nile is home to the "Big Four" of Murchison — lions, elephants, giraffes, and buffalo — along with large herds of Uganda kob, which draw the park's resident predators. Early morning drives offer the coolest temperatures and the most active wildlife.
The Nile boat cruise. A launch cruise from Paraa up to the base of the falls is one of the best wildlife-viewing experiences in Uganda. Expect close encounters with hippo pods, basking Nile crocodiles, and dense concentrations of waterbirds, with the falls themselves growing louder as you approach.
The hike to the top. For a different perspective entirely, a trail leads up alongside the gorge to a viewpoint directly over the point where the Nile is compressed into that narrow chute. Feeling the spray and the raw force of the water from above is a completely different experience to viewing it from the boat below.
When to Visit
Murchison Falls National Park is a rewarding destination throughout the year. The dry months generally offer easier game viewing as animals gather around remaining water sources, while the wetter months bring lush scenery and excellent birdlife, including the chance to spot the elusive shoebill stork in the surrounding wetlands.
Getting There
The park is reachable by road from Kampala or Entebbe in a scenic day's drive through the Albertine Rift Valley, or by a short scheduled flight for travellers short on time. Most itineraries combine Murchison with other northern and western parks for a longer safari circuit.
